NWSL: Washington Spirit extend Deborah Abiodun's contract through 2028

Washington Spirit have agreed to a new contract with Nigerian midfielder Deborah Abiodun, extending her stay at the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club through 2028, with a mutual option for 2029.

The club announced the new two-year deal, expressing confidence in the midfielder’s continued development and her contribution to the team.

Abiodun, who joined the Spirit ahead of the 2025 season, said she was delighted to extend her commitment to the Washington-based side, describing the club as her home.

“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” Abiodun said.

“I have seen a lot of growth in my game with this club and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its success over the next three seasons.”

The Nigerian international initially spent the first half of 2025 away on loan to gain valuable experience as she began her professional career. Washington recalled her in August 2025, and she quickly established herself as an important member of the squad during the club’s run to the NWSL Championship.

Abiodun has made 21 appearances for the Spirit, recording one goal and one assist.

Washington Spirit Sporting Director James Hocken praised the midfielder’s qualities, highlighting her energy, composure and progress since joining the club.

“Deb brings a very unique skillset to our midfield. She brings an incredible energy off the ball and is a calming influence on it,” Hocken said.

“Her development since starting on our loan pathway has been a joy to watch and we are excited to keep her in the District for the foreseeable future.”

Born in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, Abiodun has considerable experience with the Super Falcons, making her senior international debut in September 2022.

She has since represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games. In 2025, she was part of the Super Falcons squad that won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, securing Nigeria’s record-extending 10th continental championship.

Before turning professional, Abiodun spent two seasons playing college soccer at the University of Pittsburgh, where she made 34 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists.

Her performances earned her All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) recognition in both seasons. In 2023, she was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and Third Team, before earning Second Team All-ACC honours in 2024.

The contract extension represents another step in Abiodun’s professional development as she looks to build on her progress with Washington Spirit and continue contributing to both club and country.
