NFF sacks Super Falcons technical crew after dismal WAFCON 2026
The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed members of the Super Falcons technical crew to step down from their positions with immediate effect.
The federation announced the decision in a brief notice on its official social media platform on Monday, bringing the current technical arrangement of the senior women’s national team to an abrupt end.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF stated.
The directive comes in the wake of Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Falcons failed to defend their continental title and subsequently missed out on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the global showpiece represents a major setback, ending the Super Falcons’ record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
The NFF’s decision also comes amid growing calls for a comprehensive review of the team’s technical direction following the disappointing WAFCON outing.
While the federation did not provide further details on the reasons behind the directive, the decision is expected to pave the way for a fresh technical structure as Nigeria begins preparations for the next international cycle.
It remains unclear whether the NFF will appoint an interim coaching team or move directly to recruit a substantive head coach.
The timing is particularly significant, with Nigeria’s Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign scheduled to begin in October 2026, when the Super Falcons are expected to face Comoros.
The NFF will now be under pressure to resolve the coaching situation swiftly and provide the team with stability as preparations begin for another crucial qualification campaign.
The development also marks a significant moment for the federation as it weighs the lessons from the WAFCON campaign and seeks to rebuild the Super Falcons following one of the most disappointing outcomes in the team’s history.
