Niger Delta Games: Team Edo extend medal haul on Day two
Team Edo continued their impressive showing at the ongoing Niger Delta Games, Edo 2026, delivering a string of gold medals and podium finishes across para sports, athletics and team events on Day Two of competition.
The day began on a golden note in Para Powerlifting, where Philomena Edomwandagbon announced her dominance with a commanding lift of 115kg to secure Team Edo’s first gold of the day. Rivers State followed with silver after lifting 87kg, while Imo State claimed bronze with an 82kg effort.
Moments later, Edo’s grip on the power events was further strengthened as Obarisiuwa Emmanuel powered through a massive 125kg lift in the men’s 54kg Para Powerlifting category, clinching another gold medal in emphatic fashion and underlining the state’s strength in the discipline.
On the athletics track, Emmanuel Chakamumudu Audu produced a standout performance in the men’s shot put, launching the implement to an impressive distance of 17.37 metres to secure gold. His victory added valuable points to Edo’s medal tally and reflected the depth of preparation behind the team’s campaign.
In team sports, Team Edo’s female volleyball side thrilled the home crowd with a convincing 2–0 victory over Delta State at the Wire Road venue in Benin City, displaying excellent coordination, resilience and composure throughout the encounter.
While results were mixed elsewhere, the fighting spirit of Team Edo remained evident. The male basketball team bowed out, and the male boxing team fell short against Imo State, but both squads showed determination and are expected to regroup as the Games progress.
In the women’s 100 metres final, Delta State’s Ejiro Peter claimed gold in a tightly contested race, clocking 11.58 seconds. Team Edo’s Tejiri Ugoh Praise finished strongly for silver in 11.76 seconds, while Victory Imoisemeh Azobudi completed the podium for Edo with a bronze medal in 11.78 seconds.
Team Edo also added to their medal count in Taekwondo, as Stephane Otaigbe secured bronze medals in both the Pair Poomsae and Female Individual Poomsae categories. Raymond Onosetal Imhandojiemu contributed another bronze for the hosts in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 14.32 metres.
