NPFL: Bendel Insurance thrash Wikki Tourist in Benin City
Bendel Insurance finally found their rhythm in the Nigeria Premier Football League, cruising to a comfortable 3–0 victory over Wikki Tourists in their Matchday 15 clash at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The Benin Arsenals got off to a bright start and opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Chinedu Nwosu, whose composed finish set the tone for a game Insurance dominated from start to finish.
Insurance maintained their intensity throughout the first half, controlling possession and dictating play as they went into the break with a deserved 1–0 lead.
Head coach Kennedy Boboye wasted no time making tactical adjustments after the restart, introducing Nnamdi Anthony and Onyeuche Ujunwa for Adamu Yazid and Israel Emmanuel. The change paid off almost instantly. In the 47th minute, Emmanuel Dung doubled the lead, calmly converting a through ball from Ujunwa to make it 2–0.
The hosts kept pushing, and their pressure yielded another goal in the 58th minute. Emmanuel Akpan, who scored his debut goal against Kano Pillars two weeks earlier, struck again, reacting quickest to Henry Onyian’s long throw after Wikki’s failed clearance to seal a comprehensive 3–0 victory.
Coming off a gritty goalless draw away at Abia Warriors on November 23, Bendel Insurance will now travel to Katsina United for their Matchday 16 fixture next week.
The emphatic win is Insurance’s third of the season and a significant boost for a team that has struggled in the early stages of the campaign. With the three points, the Benin Arsenals climb to 16 points and could move out of the relegation zone depending on other results.
Speaking after the match, coach Boboye praised his players for their improved efficiency in front of goal.
“We’ve played good football against teams less tactical than Wikki, yet failed to convert chances. If we had taken our opportunities against Abia Warriors, we would have returned with all three points.
I’m happy we got it right today, especially against a coach who knows his job like Maikaba.”
Wikki Tourists coach Abdul Maikaba, in his reaction, congratulated Boboye on the victory, attributing his side’s heavy defeat to injuries to key players.
