Nigeria’s Falconets will face England in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday, September 17, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The knockout clash is scheduled for the Stadion Miejski Bielsko-Biała in Poland, with kick-off set for 3:00 p.m. local time and 2:00 p.m. Nigerian time.  

Nigeria booked their place in the last 16 after an emphatic 10-1 victory over New Caledonia in their final Group F fixture. The result followed a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China.

The Falconets finished second in Group F with four points and advanced alongside Spain, setting up the meeting with England in the first knockout round.  

Coach Moses Aduku’s side will enter the encounter with confidence following the emphatic New Caledonia victory, in which Ramotalahi Kareem and Winner David both scored hat-tricks.

England, meanwhile, finished second in Group B after recording a 5-1 victory over Tanzania and suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brazil. Rachel Maltby was among their standout players after scoring a hat-trick against Tanzania.  

The fixture continues a competitive history between the two countries at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria and England drew 1-1 in both 2008 and 2010 before the Falconets secured a 2-1 victory in 2014.

In that 2014 encounter, Loveth Ayila scored Nigeria’s equaliser before Asisat Oshoala converted the decisive penalty to complete the comeback.  

Nigeria have established themselves as regular contenders at the competition and have reached the final twice, in 2010 and 2022, although the Falconets are still searching for their first world title.

The 2026 tournament is being staged across Poland, with 24 teams competing for the global crown. Nigeria’s continued presence in the knockout phase extends the country’s record of participating in every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since its inception.  

Thursday’s encounter will therefore carry added significance for both teams, with the single-elimination format leaving no room for a second chance. The winner will advance to the quarter-finals, while the losing side will exit the competition.

For the Falconets, the assignment offers another opportunity to continue Nigeria’s strong tradition at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. The road to the quarter-finals begins at Stadion Miejski Bielsko-Biała on Thursday afternoon.
