Osayi-Samuel wins Man of the Match as Birmingham beat West Brom

Nigeria defender Bright Osayi-Samuel was named Man of the Match after helping Birmingham City secure a 1-0 away victory over West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship on Saturday.

The Nigerian international delivered an impressive defensive performance at The Hawthorns as Birmingham claimed all three points to strengthen their position in the second tier of English football.

Osayi-Samuel featured for the entire 90 minutes, providing defensive stability and helping Birmingham protect their narrow advantage against a determined West Brom side.

The decisive moment came in the 41st minute when August Priske converted a penalty to give Birmingham the lead. His goal ultimately separated the two teams in a closely contested encounter.

Osayi-Samuel’s contribution was particularly evident in his defensive work, as the right-back recorded three clearances and 11 recoveries, helping to limit West Brom’s attacking threat.

The recognition capped a strong individual display from the 28-year-old, who has become an important part of Birmingham’s defensive setup this season.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies praised the Nigerian’s performance, describing him as excellent and highlighting his discipline, physical condition and ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases.

Davies also noted that Osayi-Samuel had returned from international duty later than some of his teammates but still produced a highly effective performance for the club.

The victory was an important result for Birmingham, who continued their push towards the upper end of the Championship table.

Following the win, Birmingham occupied seventh position with 14 points from nine matches, six points behind league leaders Swansea City, according to reports published after the game.

For Osayi-Samuel, the award offers a positive response after Nigeria’s recent international fixtures and reinforces his importance to both club and country.

The full-back will now look to maintain his consistency as Birmingham continue their Championship campaign, while also remaining in contention for future Super Eagles assignments.

His latest performance further highlights the value of Nigerian players competing in England, with Osayi-Samuel demonstrating the defensive discipline and work rate required at a demanding level of club football.
