Russell ends Tobi Amusan's World Record reign in Zurich thriller
American hurdler Masai Russell has dethroned Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan as the women’s 100m hurdles world-record holder after producing a sensational run at the Zurich Diamond League.
Russell stormed to victory in 12.09 seconds, shaving three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds, set in 2022.
Amusan, widely known as “Tobi Express,” finished second in the high-profile race with a season-best 12.23 seconds, but was unable to retain the global mark she had held for four years.
The Nigerian’s 12.12 second performance in 2022 had stunned the athletics world and established her as the fastest woman ever over the 100m hurdles at the time.
Russell’s remarkable 12.09 second display in Zurich has now rewritten the record books, bringing an end to Amusan’s historic reign and setting a new benchmark for the event.
Despite losing her world record, Amusan’s season best performance signals a return to top form as she continues her campaign on the international athletics circuit.
