SWAN pledges support for Bayelsa ahead of 2028 National Sports Festival
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has pledged its support and collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government as preparations gather momentum for the state’s proposed hosting of the 2028 National Sports Festival (NSF).
SWAN National President, Isaiah Benjamin, gave the assurance during an inspection tour of ongoing sports infrastructure projects in Bayelsa State, led by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo.
The inspection formed part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of Bayelsa State’s creation and provided an opportunity to assess the state’s preparations towards hosting the national sporting event.
Benjamin expressed satisfaction with the projects inspected and commended the administration of Governor Douye Diri for its investment in sports infrastructure, describing the developments as important to the growth of sports in Bayelsa and Nigeria as a whole.
The SWAN president visited the 30,000-capacity Igbogene Stadium, the 5,000-capacity stadium at Sampou, the Wrestling Gymnasium and the training football pitch located behind the Government House in Yenagoa.
Speaking after the tour, Benjamin appreciated the state government for inviting the association to participate in the celebrations marking Bayelsa’s 30 years of existence.
“I want to first thank the Bayelsa State Government, through the Honourable Commissioner, for the honour of joining in the celebration of Bayelsa State at 30 years since its creation. It is indeed a great privilege.
“We have visited several ongoing projects, and I can say that Bayelsa is making commendable progress. The preparations are extensive, and I want to appreciate His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, for investing significantly in sports,” Benjamin said.
He reaffirmed SWAN’s readiness to work with the state government and other relevant stakeholders to support efforts towards a successful 2028 National Sports Festival.
According to Benjamin, the association, as the umbrella body of sports journalists in Nigeria, will continue to promote sports development initiatives, provide professional media coverage and encourage partnerships capable of advancing the sector nationwide.
He further noted that the infrastructure investments could deliver lasting benefits beyond the festival by creating opportunities for grassroots talent development, improving training facilities and strengthening Bayelsa’s capacity to host major sporting competitions.
SWAN reiterated its commitment to collaborating with governments, sports federations, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to promote sports development, expand grassroots participation and support sustainable opportunities for Nigerian athletes.
The association’s pledge adds to the growing support for Bayelsa’s preparations, with the state’s ongoing infrastructure projects expected to play a key role in its ambition to host one of Nigeria’s biggest multi-sport events in 2028.
