Senegal slams CAF over AFCON 2025 decision

The Senegalese Football Federation has strongly condemned the decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip the country of hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, describing the move as unjust and damaging to African football.

In a sharply worded statement, the federation expressed its outrage, insisting the ruling was both surprising and unfair.

“The Senegalese Football Federation denounces this unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable decision, which discredits African Football,” the statement read.

The controversy adds another layer of tension to CAF’s recent tournament organization decisions, which have often been criticized for late changes and lack of transparency.

Senegal, one of Africa’s most respected footballing nations and the reigning continental powerhouse in recent years, had been preparing extensively to host the prestigious competition.

Beyond infrastructure upgrades and logistical planning, the West African nation had also viewed the tournament as an opportunity to showcase its growing football culture and organizational capability on the continental stage.

Losing the hosting rights not only disrupts those plans but also raises questions about CAF’s selection and review processes.

Senegal’s rise in African football has been significant, highlighted by their historic triumph at the 2021 AFCON and consistent performances in global competitions.

Hosting AFCON 2025 was expected to further cement the country’s status as a leading force both on and off the pitch.

While CAF has yet to fully clarify the reasons behind the decision, insiders suggest concerns over readiness timelines and organizational benchmarks may have influenced the move.

However, Senegal’s football authorities remain adamant that the decision undermines trust and credibility within African football governance.

With tensions now heightened, attention will shift to how CAF manages the fallout and whether further explanations or even a reconsideration will follow.
