Seun Ogunsakin stuns US Open seed, claims historic junior grandslam breakthrough
Nigeria’s Seun Ogunsakin has announced himself on the biggest stage of junior tennis, recording a landmark victory at the 2026 US Open Junior Championships in New York.
The Nigerian teenager, who entered the 64-player boys’ singles main draw as a qualifier, produced a spirited comeback to defeat 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in a fiercely contested first-round encounter.
Ogunsakin was forced to dig deep after surrendering the opening set, but the Aurum Tennis Academy player responded with composure and determination. He levelled the contest by taking the second set before holding his nerve in a tense decider to secure the biggest main-draw victory of his young career.
The result represents Ogunsakin’s first ever match win in the main draw of a Junior Grand Slam and adds another significant milestone to an already promising 2026 campaign.
His US Open appearance is his third consecutive junior major of the year, following his participation at the French Open and Wimbledon, where he reached the boys’ singles main draw and advanced to the doubles semi finals.
His impressive run in New York began in qualifying, where he went through the rounds without dropping a set and capped his campaign with a notable victory over Canadian top seed Felix Roussel.
Ogunsakin has now carried that momentum into the hard-court main draw, strengthening his growing reputation as one of Africa’s brightest young tennis prospects and one of Nigeria’s emerging international stars.
With his maiden Junior Grand Slam main draw victory secured, Ogunsakin will now turn his attention to the next round, where he will aim to extend a breakthrough campaign that is rapidly gaining international attention.
