South East Governors Actively Engaging FG on Nnamdi Kanu’s Release – Gov. Otti

UMUAHIA, Nigeria — Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has stated that governors of the South East are actively engaging relevant federal authorities to secure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking at a media parley on Thursday night in Umuahia, Otti dismissed claims that South East political leaders had abandoned Kanu, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021.

"The perception that we are doing nothing is not correct. Some of the engagements and assurances we have received are not meant for public disclosure, as making them public could jeopardize ongoing efforts," Otti said.

"But you can take it for granted that, as his Governor, I’m at the forefront of ensuring he comes back home. All the South East governors are united in this cause."

The governor’s comments come a day after a group of Igbo elders staged a protest at the Abia State Government House, expressing concern over Kanu’s continued detention. The elders accused political leaders in the region of inaction and urged Governor Otti to mobilize his colleagues to press President Bola Tinubu’s administration for Kanu’s release.

Otti expressed optimism that the discreet engagements would eventually lead to a positive outcome.

Otti on Arochukwu Communal Clashes

Governor Otti also addressed the ongoing communal conflict between Itu community in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State and neighboring communities in Cross River State, which has led to the displacement of several residents.

He attributed the violence to unverified claims of the presence of natural resources, particularly limestone, in the disputed area.

"The Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, has been engaging with officials from Cross River and Akwa Ibom States in Abuja to find a lasting resolution. We are working hard to restore peace and ensure that the displaced residents return to their ancestral homes," he assured.

Reiterates Commitment to Governance

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, vowing not to be distracted by politically motivated attacks or campaigns of misinformation.

"While I remain open to constructive criticism, I will not succumb to blackmail or deliberate distortions of facts. Our focus is on delivering real progress to the people of Abia State," he said.
