Sporting Lagos seal dramatic NPFL return with gritty win in Ile-Ogbo
Sporting Lagos are back where they believe they belong.
On a tense final day in the Nigeria National League, the Lagos-based side secured promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Osun United on Thursday, completing a long-awaited return to the top flight after two years away.
Knowing only a win would guarantee their comeback, Sporting Lagos started with urgency and found their breakthrough early. In the 17th minute, Aliyu Baba delivered a pinpoint cross that was met with a composed header by Alex Leme, a goal that would ultimately define their season.
But the journey to promotion was anything but straightforward.
Just moments after falling behind, Osun United, desperate to avoid relegation, were handed a lifeline from the penalty spot. However, Hakeem Olalere’s effort rattled the woodwork, sparing Sporting Lagos and shifting the momentum back in favour of the visitors.
What followed was a relentless siege.
Jeffrey Butler’s men were forced onto the back foot for much of the contest, clinging to their slender lead as Osun United pressed for an equaliser. Goalkeeper Clinton Lawal emerged as the hero of the night, producing a string of outstanding saves to preserve the advantage and keep promotion hopes alive.
Elsewhere, fellow promotion contenders Akwa United did their part with a win over Solution FC in Awka. But it proved insufficient. Sporting Lagos’ narrow victory in Ile Ogbo ensured they edged the race and sealed their place in the elite division.
At full time, relief gave way to celebration.
Sporting Lagos’ return marks a significant moment for football in the commercial capital, as they join Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City to strengthen Lagos’ presence in the NPFL ahead of the 2026/27 season.
