Sunday Adetunji makes history as Al Hilal win Rwanda league title in exile
Former NPFL star Sunday Adetunji has become part of African football history after helping Al Hilal Omdurman secure the Rwanda Premier League title in a remarkable season played away from home due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The Sudanese giants sealed the championship after an outstanding campaign that saw them dominate the league from start to finish. Al Hilal played 30 matches, amassed 70 points, scored 69 goals, and conceded just 20 in a season that highlighted their consistency and resilience despite difficult circumstances.
The title success also marked a groundbreaking achievement in African football history, with Al Hilal becoming the first club on the continent to win top-flight league titles in three different countries Sudan, Mauritania, and Rwanda.
Forced to relocate because of the crisis in Sudan, the club adapted brilliantly to unfamiliar surroundings and continued to perform at the highest level, further strengthening their reputation as one of Africa’s most resilient football institutions.
Adetunji, who made his name in the Nigeria Professional Football League before moving abroad, played an important role in the historic campaign as Al Hilal delivered one of the most unique title winning stories ever witnessed in African club football.
