Chiamaka Nnadozie leads Brighton's miracle comeback into historic FA Cup final
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie delivered another commanding performance as Brighton & Hove Albion Women reached their first-ever Women’s FA Cup final with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Liverpool Women on Sunday.
Playing at BrewDog Stadium, Brighton found themselves under pressure early after Liverpool stormed into a two goal lead inside 22 minutes through D. O’Sullivan and B. Olsson.
However, Brighton responded immediately as M. Vanegas pulled one back barely a minute later to revive the contest before M. Haley restored parity after the restart.
With the game heading towards extra time, substitute Nadine Noordam emerged as the hero, firing home a stoppage time winner to complete a remarkable turnaround and send Brighton to Wembley Stadium for the first time in their history.
Despite Liverpool dominating possession for long spells, Nnadozie remained calm and authoritative between the posts. The Nigerian shot stopper made several crucial saves while expertly marshalling Brighton’s defensive line to withstand sustained pressure from the visitors.
Liverpool managed only four shots on target despite controlling much of the ball, with Nnadozie’s positioning, communication and composure proving vital in Brighton’s famous victory.
Former England midfielder Fran Kirby praised Brighton’s mentality after the match.
“We went up a level in the second half. The culture in the group is incredible,” Kirby told TNT Sports.
Brighton will now face Manchester City Women in what promises to be a thrilling Women’s FA Cup final after City produced their own dramatic comeback to defeat Chelsea Women 3-2 after extra time at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea appeared to be cruising into the final after goals from Erin Cuthbert and Sam Kerr established a two goal advantage. But Mary Fowler sparked City’s revival late in normal time before Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw equalised deep into stoppage time.
Shaw then completed the turnaround in extra time, scoring the decisive goal in the 103rd minute to book Manchester City’s place in the final.
The Women’s FA Cup final between Brighton and Manchester City will take place at Wembley Stadium on May 31.
