Austin Eguavoen hails Super Falcons' 5-0 win, worries over Ajibade's injury

Nigeria's senior women's national team interim coach Austin Eguavoen has expressed satisfaction with Super Falcons' 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of their second-round clash in the 2028 Olympic qualifiers, while expressing concern over an injury sustained by captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Ajibade was forced off early in the encounter and was subsequently taken to the hospital for an MRI scan to determine the extent of her injury.

Eguavoen, who expressed hope that the Atletico Madrid forward had not suffered a serious setback, said the medical team would communicate the results to the team’s media department.

“Congratulations to Nigeria. Rasheedat Ajibade has been taken to the hospital for an MRI after the degree of injury she sustained. We will know the extent of the injury before we get to the hotel,” Eguavoen said.

“Unfortunately, we lost Ajibade early in the match. I hope and pray that the injury is not serious.”

Despite the early setback, the former Super Eagles coach praised the team’s performance, noting that the players improved their finishing to score five goals.

“I am very happy with the result. Today, the players improved and put the ball inside the net five times. They knew they had nothing to lose,” he added.

Eguavoen also reiterated Nigeria’s ambition to win Olympic gold, insisting that the Super Falcons possess the quality and depth required to compete against the strongest teams in the world.

“The Super Falcons are 10-time African champions. Every team that plays against the Super Falcons will raise their game. We have set our eyes on the Olympic gold medal,” he said.

“To achieve this, it is a gradual process. Going forward, we expect to beat tougher opposition. No doubt about that. The Super Falcons are number one in Africa. We have the quality and personnel.”

The 10-time african champions will face Morocco in the third round of the qualifiers next year.
