Super Falcons, DTigress: NSC, Finance Minister resolve final hurdles on Presidential cash rewards
The Federal Government has moved closer to completing the payment of the outstanding cash component of the Presidential Rewards approved for members of Nigeria’s senior women’s football and basketball teams, the Super Falcons and D’Tigress.
The development followed a meeting between National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko and Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, where the status of the rewards package and the outstanding payment process were reviewed.
The meeting resolved the final hurdles surrounding the cash component of the Presidential Rewards approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the players and officials of both teams.
The rewards followed the teams’ outstanding performances on the international stage in 2025, with the Super Falcons winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco and D’Tigress successfully defending their Women’s AfroBasket crown in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to Oyedele, the Federal Government has already settled the cost of the three-bedroom flats in Abuja acquired for and presented to the players and officials as part of the Presidential recognition.
He added that the process for releasing the cash component would be concluded immediately, paving the way for beneficiaries to receive the approved payments.
The minister further indicated that payment alerts would begin reaching the individual accounts of the beneficiaries through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in line with the approvals and directives issued by President Tinubu.
The players and officials have already received the title documents for the three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, alongside Certificates of National Honour of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON), duly endorsed by the President.
The latest development is therefore expected to bring an end to the prolonged wait for the financial component of the Presidential Rewards package.
For the Super Falcons, the recognition followed their successful WAFCON campaign in Morocco, where they secured another continental title and further strengthened Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
D’Tigress, meanwhile, retained their Women’s AfroBasket title in Côte d’Ivoire, reinforcing their status as one of Africa’s leading women’s basketball teams.
NSC Chairman Dikko reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that all outstanding Presidential Rewards and other commitments made to the national teams are fulfilled through due process.
“The Sports Commission remains committed to ensuring that the Presidential Rewards and other commitments made are followed through due process to conclusion,” Dikko said.
The resolution is expected to provide relief to the affected players and officials, who have been awaiting the completion of the cash component after receiving the other elements of the Presidential recognition.
The move also signals the Federal Government’s intention to honour its commitments to athletes and officials who deliver major international successes for Nigeria.
