Exclusive: Super Falcons set for UK Tour in May
Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, will embark on a training tour of the United Kingdom later this month as preparations intensify for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The camp is scheduled to hold from May 23 to 28 in the UK, with one friendly match expected to be played during the tour.
Although the camping period falls outside the FIFA international window, the Nigeria Football Federation is understood to be using the opportunity to further strengthen the squad ahead of next year’s continental tournament, which will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The arrangement is also aimed at making up for the team’s disappointing inactivity during the last FIFA international window in March, when the Super Falcons failed to play any friendly matches despite initial plans.
Some senior and regular members of the squad are expected to miss the trip due to club commitments, but they are anticipated to return during the next FIFA international window scheduled for June 7 to 14.
Head coach Justine Madugu is expected to use the UK friendly to assess new players and expand his options as the Super Falcons continue preparations for WAFCON.
The Super Falcons are Africa’s defending champions after clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title last summer.
The UK tour is expected to provide the technical crew another opportunity to build team chemistry, evaluate emerging talents, and sustain Nigeria’s push to remain the dominant force in African women’s football while targeting qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
