Taiwo Awoniyi completes €9m Coventry move
Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed his permanent transfer from Nottingham Forest to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City in a deal reportedly worth around £9 million.
The 29-year-old forward brings an end to his four-year spell at the City Ground and will now link up with fellow Nigerian international Frank Onyeka, who is already part of the Coventry squad.
Coventry confirmed Awoniyi’s arrival as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of its return to the Premier League.
Speaking after completing the move, Awoniyi expressed his excitement about joining the club and working with his new teammates.
“I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City. I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
Forest spell comes to an end
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 and went on to make 103 appearances across all competitions, scoring 23 goals, including 21 in the league.
His debut season was particularly impressive, with the striker scoring 11 goals as Forest successfully battled against relegation following their return to the Premier League. He also helped the club reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Awoniyi was subsequently part of the Forest team that finished seventh in the 2024-25 Premier League season and secured European football.
From Liverpool to Germany
Awoniyi began his professional career with Liverpool before embarking on a series of loan spells with FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and KAA Gent.
He later moved to Germany, spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Mainz 05 before joining Union Berlin temporarily the following campaign.
Union Berlin eventually signed him permanently in 2021, and Awoniyi enjoyed a prolific 2021-22 season, scoring 20 goals, including four in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
His performances attracted Forest, who secured his services in 2022 for a club-record fee.
Super Eagles career
At international level, Awoniyi has won 10 caps for Nigeria and scored twice for the Super Eagles.
His move to Coventry presents the striker with a fresh opportunity to re-establish himself in the Premier League and play a key role in the club’s campaign.
With Onyeka already in the squad, Awoniyi’s arrival also creates a new Nigerian connection at Coventry as the club prepares for the demands of top-flight football.
Coventry secured promotion after an impressive Championship campaign and will now return to England’s elite division with Awoniyi expected to add experience, physical presence and attacking quality to the squad.
