Team Nigeria made a powerful opening statement at the 2026 African Armwrestling Championship in Accra, racking up six gold medals and booking places in eight left-arm finals to signal clear intent for continental dominance.

From the outset, Nigerian athletes displayed remarkable strength and consistency across multiple weight divisions, reinforcing their ambition not only to top the medal table but also to secure qualification spots for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.

In the senior categories, competition was fierce. In the 100kg left arm division, Oluwatobiloba Adedokun Stephen clinched silver while Emmy Nwobodo settled for bronze, both finishing behind Egypt’s Mohammed AbdelRahman, with all three earning qualification slots for Cairo.

Team captain Timi Seikpotuburu added another silver in the 110kg category, coming second to Egypt’s Mohamed Salama, while Ghana’s Dodzi Assinu claimed bronze. Emmanuel Tuesday also impressed with a silver medal finish in the 75kg division, narrowly missing out on gold to Ghana’s Godwin Sackey.

Nigeria’s golden moments came in key events. Mausi Zannu Elizabeth triumphed in the Senior Women 55kg category, defeating Ghana’s Rachel Lankai in the final, while Adefunke Afeniforo dominated the 65kg class. Oluwasegun Ajao Tunde delivered another top podium finish in the Senior -55kg division.

The youth category further highlighted Nigeria’s depth. Emmanuel Tuesday returned to claim gold in the Youth 75kg event, while Chidinma Udoeshi emerged victorious in the Youth Women 80kg division.

Additional podium finishes came via bronze medals from John Iwela, Blessing Ogungbure, Ndidi Winifred, Sandra Ndukwu, Ogochukwu Ezeugo, and Peace Anokwuru, underlining the team’s overall strength.

With an impressive medal haul already secured, Team Nigeria has firmly positioned itself as a leading force in Accra, setting the tone for what could be a dominant campaign as the championship progresses.
