Kwankwaso set to dump ADC for NDC as opposition realigns ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is poised to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) next week, according to sources within the Kwankwasiyya movement.

The move signals a notable shift within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as political actors begin early positioning for the 2027 general elections.

Spokesman of the movement, Habibu Mohammed, said the decision followed a unanimous endorsement by key stakeholders. Representatives from all 44 local government areas in Kano reportedly convened at Kwankwaso’s residence, where they agreed he should switch parties.

“The stakeholders have unanimously given him the go-ahead to move to the NDC,” Mohammed stated.

He also revealed that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is expected to join the NDC alongside Kwankwaso. According to him, negotiations with the party are nearly complete, with only minor details left unresolved.

“I believe him, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” he added.

Mohammed attributed the planned defection largely to the lingering leadership crisis within the ADC. He cited a recent Supreme Court ruling that returned internal disputes to the Federal High Court, prolonging uncertainty within the party.

“It does not look feasible to stay there… the entire caucus voted unanimously that a better platform, not embedded in a leadership tussle, should be used,” he said.

He further pointed to ongoing litigation and looming deadlines for submission of party membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as key concerns. Staying in the ADC, he warned, could undermine the movement’s broader political strategy.

The spokesperson disclosed that both the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the NDC were considered before settling on the latter.

Internal disagreements within the ADC, particularly around consensus candidacy, also played a role in the decision. Meanwhile, Obi has reportedly distanced himself from ADC activities since the opposition summit in Ibadan, citing dissatisfaction over unresolved issues such as zoning of the presidential ticket—an issue he considers critical for fairness and unity within the party.
