Tonobok Okowa hails Team Nigeria's medal haul at CAA Region 2 Championship
President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has applauded Team Nigeria's junior athletes following their outstanding showing at the 2026 CAA Region 2 U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Dakar, Senegal.
Okowa, who also serves as Senior Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and President of CAA Region 2, praised the young athletes for their determination, discipline and resilience, describing their performances as a strong indication of the bright future of Nigerian athletics.
Team Nigeria wrapped up the championships with an impressive haul of 23 medals, 15 gold, seven silver and one bronze, to emerge as one of the competition's top-performing nations.
The AFN president also reserved special praise for the coaches, technical officials and support staff, noting that the team's success was a product of careful planning, dedication and collective effort.
According to him, the achievements recorded in Dakar reflect the steady progress being made in developing the next generation of Nigerian track and field stars.
Okowa urged the athletes not to relent, encouraging them to remain committed to their training as they prepare to compete on even bigger international stages in the years ahead.
He also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders for their continued support of athletics development in Nigeria, while reaffirming the federation's commitment to discovering and nurturing young talents capable of bringing more honours to the country.
