U-20 Women’s World Cup: Falconets held by China, Nigeria face must-win clash against New Caledonia
Nigeria’s Falconets kept their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup knockout-stage hopes alive after playing out a goalless draw with China PR on Thursday.
The result leaves Nigeria with one point from two Group F matches, meaning the former African champions must now produce a strong performance in their final group fixture against New Caledonia.
The Falconets entered the encounter under pressure after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening match, knowing that another setback could have seriously damaged their chances of progressing.
Despite failing to find the breakthrough against China, Nigeria secured a valuable point that keeps their campaign alive.
Spain currently lead Group F with six points and an impressive +13 goal difference after winning both of their matches.
China occupy second position with four points and a +5 goal difference, while Nigeria sit third with one point and a -2 goal difference.
New Caledonia remain bottom without a point and have a -16 goal difference.
With one group match remaining, Nigeria still have two possible routes into the knockout phase.
The most direct route is to defeat New Caledonia and hope other results and the final standings work in their favour for second place.
Nigeria could also advance as one of the four best third-placed teams across the six groups, although their goal difference and points tally mean the Falconets will need a convincing result in their final fixture.
The goalless draw against China therefore provides Nigeria with another opportunity to revive their campaign rather than ending their hopes altogether.
The Falconets will now turn their attention to New Caledonia, knowing that anything less than a strong result could leave their fate dependent on results elsewhere.
Nigeria’s final Group F match is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, with kick-off set for 2:00pm Nigerian time.
The encounter presents coach Moses Aduku and his players with their final opportunity to make a push for the Round of 16 and keep Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign alive.
