Lekki Scrabble Classics 2026 introduces U-12 category for future champions
The organisers of the 2026 Lekki Scrabble Classics have introduced a dedicated Under-12 category as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots development and create a pathway for the next generation of Nigerian Scrabble players.
The tournament is scheduled to hold from September 26 to 27 at the Lekki Scrabble Club, with the new U-12 section expected to give young players an opportunity to experience competitive Scrabble alongside some of the country’s established players.
The introduction of the junior category marks a significant expansion of the annual competition, which has traditionally attracted predominantly experienced Scrabble players.
With a top prize of $1,000 on offer at the main tournament, organisers believe the inclusion of younger players will help identify promising talents at an early stage and provide them with the competitive foundation required to develop into elite players.
President of the Lekki Scrabble Club, Samuel Anikoh, said the decision was driven by the need to expose children to serious competition early enough in their development.
According to Anikoh, starting Scrabble at a young age can provide players with valuable experience and improve their prospects of reaching the highest level of the sport.
He pointed to defending Lekki Classics champion Abdulmumeen Jimoh as an example of how early exposure can contribute to the development of a top-level player.
“Jimoh is evidence that starting early does have its benefits,” Anikoh said, explaining the motivation behind the creation of the children’s section.
He added that the initiative builds on the club’s existing school Scrabble programme while giving promising U-12 players a platform to experience tournament competition for the first time.
The organisers are hopeful that the new category will help bridge the gap between school-level participation and elite competitive Scrabble.
Beyond winning prizes, the young participants will have the opportunity to improve their word skills, develop competitive confidence and learn from experienced players taking part in the Classics.
The initiative could also provide an important talent-identification mechanism for Nigerian Scrabble, particularly as the country continues to produce players capable of competing successfully at international level.
By creating a structured competitive environment for children, the Lekki Scrabble Classics organisers hope to ensure that today’s young participants can gradually progress through the ranks and become tomorrow’s national and international champions.
The 2026 edition therefore promises to be more than another major Scrabble tournament, with the introduction of the U-12 category signalling a broader commitment to sustainable grassroots development of the game in Nigeria.
