Umofia wins Nigeria's fourth gold at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia delivered a commanding performance to win the men’s 71kg weightlifting gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, extending Team Nigeria’s impressive medal haul.
Umoafia dominated the competition from the outset, lifting 147kg in the snatch to top the standings before matching the best clean and jerk lift of 172kg. His combined total of 319kg secured the gold medal and reinforced Nigeria’s growing dominance in weightlifting at the Games.
The Nigerian lifter entered the clean and jerk with the advantage after his superb snatch display and maintained his composure to finish atop the podium, earning Team Nigeria another memorable gold medal.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi claimed the silver medal after recording 142kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses settled for bronze with lifts of 140kg and 170kg, finishing on 310kg overall.
The triumph increases Team Nigeria’s gold medal tally to four, with the country now boasting eight medals overall at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
