Volleyball: Nigeria Customs appoints Jaiyeola as alternate captain
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has appointed Abdulquadri Jaiyeola as the alternate captain of its men's volleyball team ahead of the second phase of the 2026 Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, by the Head of Sports, Samuel Onikeku.
According to Onikeku, Jaiyeola's elevation reflects his leadership qualities and vast experience, particularly after recently leading Nigeria's senior men's volleyball team to qualification for the African Nations Championship qualifiers in Abidjan.
"Abdulquadri Jaiyeola has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership both at the national and club levels," Onikeku said. "His experience and dedication make him a worthy addition to the team's leadership structure as alternate captain."
He also recalled Jaiyeola's contribution to the Nigeria Customs team during the 2021 African Men's Club Championship in Tunisia.
Onikeku clarified that Philip Akande will remain captain of the NCS men's volleyball team, while Chris Udah and Princewill Okoi will continue in their roles as first and second assistant captains, respectively.
The sports chief also praised the team's performance during the opening phase of the league and challenged the players to raise their level in the decisive second phase.
"Our men's team displayed a high level of professionalism, discipline and commitment throughout the first phase of the league," Onikeku said. "I urge the players to improve on that performance and remain focused as we head into the final phase of the competition. We must continue to complement our efforts with hard work, teamwork and consistency if we are to achieve our objectives."
