Nigeria's Flamingos captain Harmony Chidi has promised that the team will maintain its intensity when it faces Togo in the final match of the 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday.

The Flamingos head into the decisive encounter with a perfect record after winning all four of their matches in the competition, leaving them top of the single-table standings with 12 points.  

Nigeria opened their campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger before overcoming Ghana 4-2 in their second outing.

Coach Hakeem Busari’s side then defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 before recording another 2-0 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire, with Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Pattra Oparanmegwa getting on the scoresheet.  

The four victories have put the Flamingos within touching distance of the championship, with a point against Togo enough to guarantee Nigeria the title regardless of the outcome of the other final-day fixture between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.  

Chidi has played a major role in Nigeria’s impressive campaign, scoring in the opening two matches against Niger and Ghana.

The Bayelsa Queens forward opened the scoring in Nigeria’s 5-0 victory over Niger before doubling the Flamingos’ advantage in the 4-2 win over Ghana. 

Despite their commanding position, the Flamingos captain is expected to lead the team into the final fixture with the same competitive approach that has characterised their campaign.

The encounter with Togo represents Nigeria’s fifth match of the tournament and another opportunity for the young players to test themselves against regional opposition ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos were initially scheduled to face a different sequence of opponents following Benin Republic’s withdrawal from the tournament, which led to changes to the competition schedule.

Nigeria’s attacking form has been one of the major features of their campaign, while their defensive organisation has also produced three clean sheets in four matches.  

Adegbuyi has been particularly influential in front of goal, while Mary Dunstan, who scored against Burkina Faso, and Oparanmegwa have also contributed important goals during the competition.  

With the title within reach, the Flamingos will be seeking to complete their campaign without defeat and maintain the momentum they have built throughout the tournament.

The final-day fixture against Togo will also provide another competitive test for Busari’s young squad as preparations continue for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, where Nigeria are among Africa’s representatives.

Nigeria’s final match is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, with Ghana facing Côte d’Ivoire in the other key fixture of the final round.
