Washington Spirit Deborah Abiodun ruled out for season, set to miss Super Falcons' Olympic Qualifiers
Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and will miss Nigeria’s crucial 2028 Olympic qualifiers against Comoros in October after Washington Spirit placed her on the season-ending injury list.
The NWSL club confirmed the development in a post on its official Instagram account, bringing an abrupt end to Abiodun’s season.
Washington Spirit did not disclose the specific nature or extent of the injury in its announcement, but her placement on the season-ending injury list means she will play no further part for the club this season.
The setback is also a major blow to the Super Falcons, with Abiodun now unavailable for Nigeria’s two-legged Olympic qualifying clash against Comoros.
Nigeria are scheduled to face Comoros in the third-round qualifying fixtures on October 9 and 13, with both matches billed for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.
Abiodun’s absence deprives the Super Falcons of an energetic and physically imposing option in the middle of the park as the team begins its quest to secure a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The 22-year-old has established herself as an important member of the national team and has continued to gain experience at club and international level.
Her injury therefore comes at an unfortunate time for both club and country, particularly with the Super Falcons entering a new phase following their disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and subsequent failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For Washington Spirit, the midfielder’s season is now officially over, while Nigeria will have to plan for the Comoros assignment without one of their established midfield options.
The Super Falcons technical crew will now be expected to assess alternative midfield combinations ahead of the October qualifiers.
Abiodun’s rehabilitation will be closely monitored, although no specific recovery timeline has been announced by Washington Spirit.
The priority will now be for the Nigeria international to make a full recovery and return to competitive football when medically cleared.
