President Bola Tinubu to receive Commonwealth Games baton in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu will today, in Abuja, receive the King’s Baton Relay, a symbolic tradition that marks the official countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

Activities surrounding the Baton Relay in Nigeria will take place over two days today and tomorrow, with events centred in the nation's capital, Abuja.

According to a statement released yesterday by the Director of Press at the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, President Tinubu will be officially presented with the Commonwealth Sport King’s Baton by a delegation representing Buckingham Palace.

A long-standing tradition of the Commonwealth Games, the King’s Baton Relay symbolizes unity, peace, and shared values among member nations. This year’s relay also carries a critical message, as the Commonwealth Sport Movement partners with the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) and Nigeria’s NSC to promote the “Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign.”

Dr. Ajayi explained that the campaign aims to mobilize athletes, youth, and communities across the Commonwealth in a united effort to combat plastic pollution. The ambitious goal: to prevent one million pieces of plastic waste from entering Commonwealth waters.

Through a combination of sport and social action, the initiative seeks to spark behavioural change, inspire innovation in waste management, and raise awareness on the urgent need for ocean conservation.
