Despite bookmakers placing Nigeria as the fifth favourites for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni believes the team has what it takes to go all the way—especially with stars Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey leading the charge.

Speaking to sportscasting.com, Aiyegbeni expressed confidence that Nigeria can triumph if they reach the tournament’s decisive stages.

“I'm still going to tip Nigeria. If we get to the final, then we can win it,” he said. “Victor Osimhen has been the number one. He’s Nigeria's best player. He's like a leader in the team. You see the aggression, the fight—he gives everything on the pitch.”

Aiyegbeni also praised Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, whom he described as a crucial figure in Nigeria’s back line.

“Bassey is really solid in the team. He is a fighter; he gives 100%.”

The former Everton and Portsmouth forward added that an AFCON triumph would lift national spirits, especially after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I hope Nigeria can get to the final and win it, to bring that joy for not going to the World Cup,” he said.
