Morocco stun Netherlands on penalty to book FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 spot
Morocco once again wrote a remarkable chapter in FIFA World Cup history, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw following extra time to secure a place in the Round of 16 at Estadio Monterrey.
The Atlas Lions, who famously knocked out Spain on penalties at the 2022 World Cup, repeated their giant-killing heroics by eliminating another European powerhouse in dramatic fashion.
Despite dominating large spells of the first half, Morocco were unable to make their superiority count, and it was the Dutch who struck first against the run of play in the 72nd minute.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen launched a long pass that was expertly flicked on by substitute Wout Weghorst into the path of Crysencio Summerville. Although the winger lost his footing while bursting into the box, he recovered to square the ball for Cody Gakpo, who calmly slotted a low finish beneath Yassine Bounou to hand the Netherlands the lead.
With Ronald Koeman's side closing in on qualification, Morocco produced a dramatic response deep into stoppage time.
Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross from the left, and Issa Diop rose highest to power a header beyond Verbruggen in the first minute of added time, sending the contest into extra time.
Morocco almost completed the turnaround before penalties. Talbi was again at the heart of the attack, threading a pass that sent Soufiane Rahimi clean through on goal, but Verbruggen produced an outstanding point-blank save to keep the Netherlands alive.
The penalty shootout proved every bit as dramatic as the match itself.
Teun Koopmeiners converted the opening kick for the Dutch, while Neil El Aynaoui hit the crossbar for Morocco. However, the momentum quickly shifted when Justin Kluivert struck the post with the Netherlands' second penalty before Soufiane Rahimi levelled the scores despite Verbruggen getting a hand to the ball.
Wout Weghorst and Chemsdine Talbi both found the net with their respective efforts, but Quinten Timber then fired wide, handing Morocco a golden opportunity to move ahead. Captain Achraf Hakimi, however, saw his effort cannon off the post to keep the shootout delicately poised.
The defining moment came when Bounou produced another heroic save, denying Summerville to leave Ismael Saibari with the chance to send Morocco through.
The PSV midfielder held his nerve, calmly placing his spot-kick into the bottom corner to seal a memorable 3-2 shootout victory and spark jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players and supporters.
Bounou once again cemented his reputation as Morocco's penalty shootout specialist, while Verbruggen's impressive display, highlighted by several crucial saves during normal and extra time, was ultimately not enough to prevent the Oranje from crashing out.
Morocco will now face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 on July 4 as the Atlas Lions continue their inspiring World Cup journey.
