Young Nigerian fencers set for World Championship challenge in Hong Kong
Team Nigeria is gearing up for the 2026 World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, where a youthful squad will take on some of the world's finest fencers in the sport's biggest event outside the Olympic Games.
The championships, scheduled for July 22 to 30 at the AsiaWorld-Expo, will feature more than 1,000 athletes from over 100 countries battling for global honours.
Nigeria will compete in the men's sabre and women's épée events, with four promising fencers eager to leave their mark on the international stage.
Leading the men's sabre team is Inkosi Brou, Nigeria's highest-ranked fencer, who rose to 65th in the world after an impressive quarterfinal finish at the 2026 African Fencing Championships in Abidjan. He will be joined by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye, ranked 120th globally, and 16-year-old Olen Phoenix Zaoku, who heads into the tournament ranked 507th and will be the youngest competitor in the men's sabre event featuring 154 athletes.
In the women's épée, 17-year-old Adebodunrin Thomas will represent Nigeria. Having featured at the last two African Championships, the teenager will compete against a strong field of 174 fencers.
National coach Ibrahim Alogba believes the tournament offers more than just the chance to compete, describing it as a vital step in the team's growth and preparation for future competitions.
"We're excited to see our fencers test themselves against some of the best athletes in the world. This is an opportunity to gain valuable ranking points, build confidence, and prepare for next month's Commonwealth Championships. We believe every member of this team has what it takes to surprise the world," Alogba said.
Beyond the quest for medals, the World Championships will serve as an important dress rehearsal for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships next month as Team Nigeria continues its steady rise on the international fencing scene.
