20 kidnapped prospective NYSC corps members regain freedom after seven days

The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members kidnapped while travelling from Oyo State to their orientation camps in Abia State have regained their freedom.

The graduates were abducted seven days ago along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State, while travelling from Ibadan to their NYSC orientation camps.

The victims were reportedly travelling in two buses when gunmen attacked and abducted them.

The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million for each victim, amounting to N1 billion.

The demand was later reduced to N5 million per person, bringing the total ransom to N100 million.

Following their release, the rescued prospective corps members were taken to the Department of State Services (DSS) Hospital in Owerri, Imo State, where they are currently receiving medical attention.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the facility to meet with the victims and assess their condition.

He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Director of the DSS and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Imo State.

During the visit, Nafiu also addressed the rescued prospective corps members.
