2025 ITTF West Africa Championships: Kuti Sets Record as Ojomu Wins Maiden Title
Nigeria’s Matthew Kuti made history at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships by becoming the first West African to successfully defend the men’s singles title. Ajoke Ojomu also shone on home soil, clinching her first women’s singles crown in front of an energized Lagos crowd.
Held from July 16 to 19 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, the championship featured seven countries after Liberia’s withdrawal. Nigeria dominated, winning all team and individual events. Kuti overcame compatriot Abdulbasit Abdulfatai 4-1 (7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7) in the men’s final.
In the women’s singles, Ojomu bounced back from her 2024 loss to compatriot Hope Udoaka to claim her first regional title. She defeated Sukurat Aiyelabegan in straight sets (11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 14-12).
Both the men’s and women’s teams retained their titles with commanding wins, confirming Nigeria’s status as the region’s powerhouse. The tournament also served as a qualifier for the 2025 African Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, and was praised for its high standards and competitive atmosphere.
