Beyond Limits crowned Gothia Cup champion after thrilling penalities
Nigeria's Beyond Limits Football Academy emerged champions of the 2025 Gothia Cup B17E category after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas on Saturday.
In what was a fiercely contested final, the match ended 1-1 in regulation time, setting up a nerve-wracking shootout that stretched to eight rounds before Beyond Limits sealed the title.
ASEC Mimosas struck early, going ahead in the 5th minute through a stunning acrobatic finish by Emile Emmanuel Zongo. But Beyond Limits responded with resilience, forcing home an equaliser in the 20th minute to level the tie before halftime.
The second half saw both sides locked in a tactical battle, with chances created at both ends but no breakthrough. With no further goals, the match was decided on penalties.
The shootout was filled with drama. Beyond Limits looked to have wrapped it up after five kicks, but ASEC’s goalkeeper made a clutch save to extend the contest. It was in the eighth round that ASEC faltered a missed kick, handing the Nigerian side a historic victory and sparking jubilant scenes among players and staff.
Emmanuel Adeboyejo was named MVP of the final. Speaking after the match, he said
“I feel amazing and so relieved after that dramatic shootout. We’ve been a great team throughout this tournament, and I truly believe we deserve this.”
Beyond Limits’ triumph is a major milestone in their rise on the youth football scene, and they are expected to return home to a warm celebration.
