2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup: Nigeria vs Poland preview

Nigeria’s Flamingos will begin their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign against Poland on Saturday, October 17, as both teams battle for an early advantage in Group B in Morocco.

The encounter is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Moroccan time (7:00 p.m. Nigerian time) at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.

The tournament runs from October 17 to November 7, with Nigeria drawn alongside Poland, Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR in Group B.

The Flamingos, who won bronze at the 2022 edition in India, enter the competition hoping to build on their impressive performances under head coach Akeem Hakeem Ishola Busari. Nigeria also arrive as champions of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup after winning all five matches.

Poland Pose Early Test for Flamingos

Poland will provide a stern opening challenge for Nigeria, having reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup before losing to eventual champions Korea DPR. They missed the 2025 edition but secured their return to the competition with a 2-0 victory over England in the UEFA play-off on May 14, 2026.

Zofia Burzan scored both goals in the 42nd and 55th minutes at Inver Park in Larne to secure Poland’s qualification under head coach Paulina Kawalec.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, booked their place in Morocco after defeating Benin Republic 8-5 on aggregate, winning 3-2 in the first leg and 5-3 in the return encounter. The Flamingos subsequently swept the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, reinforcing their credentials ahead of the global tournament.

Saturday’s fixture will be the first meeting between Nigeria and Poland at U-17 level.

Busari’s side will need to combine composure in possession with incisive attacking play against an organised Polish team expected to offer a physical challenge. Nigeria’s decision-making in the final third and effectiveness from set pieces could prove crucial.

A positive result would provide valuable momentum ahead of their remaining group matches against Puerto Rico and Korea DPR.

Road to Morocco

Nigeria navigated a demanding African qualifying campaign before claiming the WAFU-B title, with Busari overseeing improvements in the team’s organisation and attacking variety since taking charge earlier in 2026.

Five players who featured at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland are also included in Nigeria’s final 21-player squad for the U-17 tournament.

Busari has emphasised discipline, patience against defensive opponents and respect for every team in the competition.

“We respect every team, and we are not looking down on any team,” the coach said during the build-up.

Players to Watch

Harmony Chidi — Nigeria

The Flamingos captain and Bayelsa Queens forward has been a consistent attacking threat throughout qualifying and the WAFU-B competition. Her goalscoring ability and leadership will be important as Nigeria seek a strong start.

Queen Joseph — Nigeria

The Fosla Academy forward has demonstrated sharp movement and finishing, including a hat-trick against Benin Republic during qualifying.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi — Nigeria

The FC Robo Queens attacker was named Most Valuable Player of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup after scoring four goals and creating several more as Nigeria won all five matches. She is expected to provide another important attacking option.

Precious Oscar, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nkwocha are also among the players who featured at the recent FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Zofia Burzan — Poland

Burzan is one of Poland’s principal attacking threats. She scored during the group stage against Finland, found the net against Spain and then struck twice in the decisive 2-0 play-off victory over England.

Nigeria’s defence will need to monitor her movement and finishing closely to limit Poland’s goalscoring opportunities.

What Nigeria Need to Reach the Round of 16

The top two teams in each group will qualify automatically for the knockout stage, while the four best third-placed teams across the six groups will also advance.

For Nigeria, finishing among the top two remains the clearest route to the Round of 16. A victory against Poland would place the Flamingos in a strong position ahead of their second match against Puerto Rico and their final group fixture against Korea DPR.

Collecting six points from their opening two matches would put Nigeria in a commanding position to progress, while four points could also leave them well placed.

Finishing third remains a possible route, but qualification would depend on how other groups finish. Securing a top-two position would remove that uncertainty and guarantee progression.

Can the Flamingos Go Far?

Nigeria’s immediate objective is to overcome Poland and secure a positive start to their campaign. Beyond the group stage, the team will be aiming to improve on their third-place finish in 2022 after exiting in the Round of 16 at the previous edition.

With a blend of experienced youth internationals, promising attacking talent and the confidence gained from their WAFU-B triumph, the Flamingos will hope to make another strong impression on the global stage.

Busari’s message remains clear: respect every opponent, maintain discipline and compete with the intensity required at a World Cup.

Saturday’s encounter against Poland will provide the first major test of those ambitions.
