6,382 athletes and officials confirmed for 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba

The National Sports Commission has confirmed that 6,382 athletes and officials will take part in the 2025 National Youth Games, set for August 29 to September 6 in Asaba, Delta State.

The figure was reached after the completion of the Digital Registration Management process across all 36 states and the FCT. According to the NSC, the record turnout highlights the growing importance of the Games in discovering and developing young Nigerian talent.

Out of the confirmed number, 4,961 are athletes, supported by 635 coaches, 386 team officials, and 400 state delegates. Gombe State is yet to conclude its registration for a 74-member delegation, but organisers say their delay does not affect the final tally.

A total of 37 sports will be contested over nine days, ranging from athletics, football, and basketball to emerging disciplines designed to widen participation. Hosts and defending champions Team Delta will again be the team to beat, though Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Edo, and others are expected to pose strong challenges.

Beyond the medals, the NSC described the Games as a platform for unity and resilience, as well as a launchpad for future stars. “The National Youth Games remain a celebration of talent, determination, and national pride,” the Commission said in a statement.

Since its inception, the competition has produced athletes who later represented Nigeria at the continental and global level. With scouts and coaches set to watch closely, this year’s edition promises both spectacle and opportunity, starting with the opening ceremony in Asaba on August 29.
