Adaobi Okah haunts Edo, Rivers survive thriller as Abia Angels shine on historic NWFL Premiership Super Six debut
The 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six got off to an exciting start in Port Harcourt on Saturday, with Matchday One delivering drama, quality football, and early statements from the league's title contenders.
From a former player punishing her old club to a five-goal spectacle and a fearless debutant performance, the opening day provided a glimpse of what could be one of the most competitive Super Six tournaments in recent years.
Nasarawa Amazons 1-0 Edo Queens
Nasarawa Amazons opened their campaign on a winning note with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Edo Queens at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
In a contest largely dominated by tactical discipline and defensive organisation, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 61st minute. Adaobi Okah came back to haunt her former club, calmly slotting home the decisive goal to hand Christopher Danjuma's side all three points.
Edo Queens pushed forward in search of an equaliser but found the Nasarawa defence difficult to break down as the Amazons held firm to secure an important opening-day win.
Rivers Angels 3-2 FC Robo Queens
The match of the day belonged to Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens, who served up an entertaining five-goal thriller in front of the Port Harcourt crowd.
Rivers Angels drew first blood through Grace Saliu in the eighth minute, but FC Robo Queens responded positively as Oluwakemi Adegbuyi levelled matters midway through the first half.
The hosts regained control after the break with two goals in quick succession. Abasiofon Uwah restored Rivers' advantage in the 65th minute before Ramotalahi Kareem extended the lead just two minutes later.
Robo Queens refused to go away quietly, with Adegbuyi grabbing her second goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute to set up a tense finale. However, Rivers Angels held their nerve to claim a valuable 3-2 victory.
Bayelsa Queens 1-1 Abia Angels
The biggest surprise of the day came in the final fixture as debutants Abia Angels announced their arrival on the Super Six stage with an impressive 1-1 draw against defending champions Bayelsa Queens.
Bayelsa looked set for a routine victory when Harmony Chidi gave them the lead, but Abia Angels responded with confidence and determination. Mariam Abdulrasheed found the equaliser to cap a spirited display from the newcomers.
Despite facing the reigning champions, Abia Angels remained organised and resilient throughout the encounter, frustrating Bayelsa's attacking threats and earning a memorable point in their first-ever Super Six appearance.
With Matchday One now complete, Sunday serves as a rest day before action resumes on Monday, June 8. While it is still early in the competition, the opening round has already shown that every point could prove decisive in the race for the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership title.
