Africa Gets Green Light to Bid for 2031 and 2035 Women’s World Cups

FIFA has officially opened the bidding process for the 2031 and 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cups, giving Africa a major opportunity to host the tournament for the first time.

The 2031 edition will be contested by Africa (CAF) and North & Central America (Concacaf), while the 2035 edition will be open to Africa (CAF) and Europe (UEFA).

This move signals FIFA’s commitment to expanding the Women’s World Cup to new territories, mirroring the continent’s historic hosting of the men’s World Cup in South Africa 2010.

With increased investment and rising competitiveness from teams like Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia, an African-hosted Women’s World Cup could further accelerate the game’s growth on the continent.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed the importance of expanding hosting opportunities, stating, “We want the FIFA Women’s World Cup to continue growing and inspiring millions worldwide. Africa has shown remarkable progress in women’s football, and this is a chance to take it to new heights.”

Potential African contenders include Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt, all of which have successfully hosted major international tournaments.

The final decision on the hosts will be made at the 76th FIFA Congress in 2026, potentially setting the stage for Africa to welcome the world’s biggest women’s football event for the first time.
