Amber Ogbolu ready to fly Nigeria's flag at FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland
Canada-born forward Amber Ogbolu has arrived in Poland and is set to represent Nigeria at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with the Falconets.
The Oregon State University forward has secured a place in Nigeria’s final squad for the tournament, marking a significant milestone in her young career.
According to FIFA’s official squad list, Ogbolu is registered for the competition as an Oregon State Beavers player in the United States and stands at 170cm. Born and raised in Canada to Nigerian parents, she will now wear the green and white as she represents her family’s country on the world stage.
In an exclusive interview with AdemolaSports, Ogbolu reflected on receiving her Falconets invitation, her Nigerian roots, adapting to a new team environment and what representing Nigeria means to her.
Emotional Call-Up for Ogbolu
Ogbolu revealed that she received the news of her Falconets call-up through her family, making the moment particularly emotional.
“I found out through my family, and it was an emotional moment for all of us.”
She described the selection as a reward for years of dedication and sacrifice from both herself and those who have supported her football journey.
“We’ve all worked and sacrificed so much over the years, so receiving the call-up was a blessing.”
However, the midfielder understood that the selection was only the beginning of a new challenge.
“It was exciting, but it also reminded me that the real work is just beginning.”
That work has now taken her to Poland, where she is preparing alongside the Falconets for the global tournament.
Proud of Her Nigerian Heritage
Although Ogbolu was born and raised in Canada, her Nigerian heritage has remained an important part of her identity.
With both parents of Nigerian descent, she says she has always been proud of her roots.
“Both of my parents are Nigerian, so I’ve always been proud of my Nigerian heritage.”
Growing up, she was exposed to Nigerian culture and values, while learning the importance of representing something bigger than herself.
That connection has taken on even greater significance now that she has the opportunity to represent Nigeria at a FIFA World Cup.
“Having the opportunity to wear Nigeria’s colours is a huge honour for me and my family.”
For Ogbolu, Nigeria’s green and white represents much more than a football jersey. It embodies her family, heritage and the country that has always been an important part of her story.
Football Passion Started Young
Ogbolu's love for football began at an early age.
“I started playing soccer when I was very young because I simply loved the game.”
Her parents played a key role in nurturing her passion, encouraging her to work hard while enjoying the journey.
“My parents always encouraged me to work hard, enjoy the process, and keep improving every day.”
Those principles have continued to guide her development and eventually helped her earn a place in the Nigerian national-team setup.
Settling Into the Falconets
Moving into the Falconets environment presented Ogbolu with the challenge of adapting to new teammates and coaches, but she says the experience has been positive.
“It’s been a great experience.”
She praised the squad and coaching staff for making her feel welcome.
“Everyone has been welcoming, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know my teammates and the coaching staff.”
Training has also given her an opportunity to learn and develop further.
“Every training session is an opportunity to learn, improve, and build chemistry with the team.”
Asked if any particular teammate helped her settle in, Ogbolu instead highlighted the support she has received from the entire squad.
“Honestly, everyone has been supportive.”
She added that the shared ambition of representing Nigeria has helped strengthen the bond within the team.
“The players have made me feel comfortable, and it’s been easy to connect because we all share the same goal of representing Nigeria.”
Embracing a Competitive Football Environment
Ogbolu has also noticed differences between her experience in North America and the football environment within the Falconets.
“The biggest difference is the style and intensity.”
She believes the competitiveness of the setup has challenged her to improve.
“The football is very competitive, and every session pushes you to improve.”
Rather than being intimidated by the adjustment, she has embraced the challenge.
“It’s been a great challenge, and I’m enjoying learning from a different football environment.”
Powerful, Intelligent and Determined
Asked to describe her playing style in three words, Ogbolu chose:
Powerful. Intelligent. Determined.
The Oregon State forward will be hoping to bring those qualities to the Falconets as Nigeria begin their World Cup campaign in Poland.
“It Would Mean Everything”
For Ogbolu, representing Nigeria at a FIFA World Cup is the realisation of a major dream.
“It would mean everything.”
She described the opportunity as the product of years of hard work, sacrifice and support from those around her.
“Representing Nigeria at a FIFA World Cup would be a dream come true and a reward for years of hard work, sacrifice, and support from my family, coaches, and teammates.”
Even after earning her place in the final squad, Ogbolu remains focused on proving herself.
“At the same time, I know I have to earn that opportunity every day in camp.”
She has now done exactly that, securing her place in Nigeria’s final squad and travelling with the Falconets to Poland.
Nigeria’s Group F Fixtures
Nigeria have been drawn in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.
The Falconets will begin their campaign against Spain on September 7, 2026, before facing China PR on September 10. They will round off the group stage against New Caledonia on September 13.
The team will be aiming to progress from the group and make a serious challenge for the World Cup title.
Ogbolu’s Message to the Fans
As she prepares for the tournament, Ogbolu remains grateful for the support she has received throughout her journey.
“I’m grateful for everyone’s support, both in Canada and Nigeria.”
She promised to approach the opportunity with humility, determination and faith.
“I’ll continue to give my best every time I step on the field, stay humble, work hard, and trust God through the journey.”
