Former NFF President Gusau pledges to champion Nigeria, Africa's interests in FIFA and WAFU-B role
Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau has pledged to leverage his positions within African and global football structures to advance the interests of Nigeria, West Africa and the wider African football community.
Gusau made the commitment in Abuja last Thursday while announcing his resignation from his key positions in Nigerian football administration.
The former NFF president was recently appointed to the FIFA Men’s Club Competitions Committee, placing him among officials involved in discussions and decisions concerning the development and future of men’s club football at the global level.
Gusau described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility, stressing that he would work to justify the confidence placed in him by FIFA leadership.
As President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B, Gusau said his extensive experience in Nigerian and West African football would allow him to bring an African perspective to the committee’s deliberations, particularly on issues surrounding the growth and sustainability of the club game.
Although he has stepped down from his major roles in Nigerian football administration, Gusau remains WAFU Zone B President. He noted that his experience in the region has given him a broader understanding of the challenges facing football development across Africa.
His appointment comes at a time when African football is seeking greater representation in global football decision-making. The increasing participation of African clubs in international competitions has also intensified discussions around commercial opportunities, player development, infrastructure and the financial sustainability of professional football.
Gusau stressed that African representatives on international football bodies must ensure that the continent’s interests are properly reflected in decisions affecting the global game.
He also expressed his willingness to work with other members of the FIFA committee to develop policies and initiatives that can strengthen football economies, particularly in countries where the professional club game is still developing.
Nigeria has maintained a strong presence within FIFA’s decision-making structures through several appointments. Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick is Deputy Chairman of the FIFA Men’s National Team Competitions Committee, while NFF Executive Committee member Aisha Falode serves on the FIFA Media and Communications Committee.
Against this backdrop, Gusau’s appointment represents not only a personal milestone but also another opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its influence in African and international football administration.
