Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare found the net again for Ajax on Saturday, but his latest goal could not prevent the Amsterdam giants from suffering a 3-1 home defeat to PSV in the Eredivisie.

The Super Eagles striker started the encounter at the Johan Cruyff Arena and restored parity for Ajax after the visitors had taken the lead.

However, Arokodare was withdrawn in the second half, with Kasper Dolberg introduced in his place as Ajax sought to change the pattern of the game.

Head coach Míchel Sánchez explained after the match that the decision was largely motivated by Arokodare’s energy levels and the need for Ajax to press more effectively.

The Spanish tactician admitted that he expected more from the Nigerian before deciding to make the change.

“Due to a lack of energy. He is a player we all support. Perhaps he wasn't playing at his best level and we needed fresh legs to press and try to find space in behind the defence.”

Míchel said Arokodare had been expected to play an important role as Ajax’s focal point, particularly in helping the team keep possession and bring other players into the game.

“We said that he would be important as a focal point. He had to enable us to hold onto the ball and allow us to play as a team. I wasn't pleased with his first actions.”

The coach, however, acknowledged Arokodare’s qualities and challenged him to bring more intensity and determination to his game.

“Ultimately, I am very passionate, and so is he. From the sidelines, we see everything much more clearly. I have asked him to put more determination and energy into his actions.”

Míchel also defended his decision to make changes, insisting that the substitutions were aimed at keeping Ajax competitive for the remainder of the match.

“The substitutions are meant so that the team can stay in the race at 100 percent. That is why we made them.”

Despite the defeat, Arokodare’s goal represents another positive moment in his early Ajax career.

The Nigerian has continued to make his presence felt in front of goal since his arrival in Amsterdam, with his latest strike taking his tally for the club to five.

Ajax, though, were unable to build on the equaliser as PSV regained control and eventually secured a convincing away victory.

The result leaves Míchel and his players with plenty to address, while Arokodare will be hoping to respond to his coach’s demands when Ajax return to action.
