Nigeria, Kenya, Angola advance to Third Round of 2028 Olympic Qualifiers

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, Kenya and Angola are among the teams that have secured places in the third round of the African qualifying series for the women's football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Nigeria advanced with a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory over Comoros, while Kenya recorded an emphatic 22-0 aggregate triumph over Seychelles. Angola also progressed after overcoming Namibia in their second-round encounter.

Morocco and Cameroon had earlier secured third-round tickets following the withdrawals of Congo and Guinea, respectively.

Nigeria confirmed their progression with a convincing 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

The result completed a 7-0 aggregate win for the 10-time African champions, who had claimed a 2-0 victory in the first leg.

The Super Falcons will now face Morocco in the third round as both sides continue their pursuit of one of Africa's two available slots at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Nigeria will be aiming to navigate the next stage successfully as they seek a return to the women's football tournament at the Olympics.

Kenya produced one of the most dominant performances of the second round, defeating Seychelles 11-0 in each leg to advance with an extraordinary 22-0 aggregate score.

Angola also booked their place in the next round after defeating Namibia 2-0 in the return leg, having played out a goalless draw in the first encounter.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia entered their return-leg fixture against Rwanda with a 1-0 advantage, while Tanzania held a narrow lead after defeating Botswana by the same scoreline away from home in the first leg.

Several African nations entered their second-leg encounters with advantages from the opening matches as the race for qualification intensified.

South Africa held a 4-0 aggregate lead over Madagascar, while Algeria enjoyed an 8-0 advantage against the Central African Republic.

Côte d'Ivoire also strengthened their position with a 4-1 first-leg victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ghana defeated Mauritius 3-0, while Senegal secured a narrow 1-0 win over Tunisia. Malawi recorded a 2-0 victory against Zimbabwe, and Burkina Faso beat Equatorial Guinea 3-1.

Benin also established an advantage after defeating Mali 3-1.

Zambia, however, faced a difficult task after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Uganda in the first leg, leaving them needing a strong response in the return encounter.

The African qualifying competition features 35 national teams competing through five knockout rounds for two places at the women's football tournament of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The third round is scheduled to take place from February 23 to March 6, 2027, with the fourth round slated for October 2027.

The final qualifying round will be held from November 23 to December 4, 2027.

At the end of the qualifying campaign, only two African nations will emerge to represent the continent at the Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from July 11 to 29, 2028.
