Ayooluwa Oke: Super Falcons right back option

The Nigeria Super Falcons are known for their strong defence, as seen in recent tournaments like the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympics.

However, there is concern about the limited options available on the right defensive flank.

Michelle Alozie has been outstanding in her role, but if she becomes unavailable, a reliable backup is urgently needed. This is where the team faces a challenge.

Rofiat Imuran has been used as her backup recently. Yet, during the friendly against France, it was clear she is not yet ready for the senior team.

A potential overseas option is Ayo Oke.

Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to Nigerian parents, Ayooluwa Naomi Oke plays as a defender for the University of California Los Angeles Bruins, known as UCLA Bruins.

She admires players like Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, Crystal Dunn of NJ/NY Gotham FC, and American legend Abby Wambach.

Ayo’s football journey started in her teens with Brookwood High School and club football at Tophat SC.

Her efforts earned her the titles of Region Midfielder of the Year and All-Region in 2020-21.

She was recognised twice with All-America honours, showing her talent and commitment.

Ayo began her college career with the California Golden Bears and made the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2021.

She played 13 matches, starting 11, and scored a decisive goal against Arizona State.

Her performance improved in 2022, earning her spots on the All-Pacific Region first team and the All-Pac-12 second team.

In 2023, she transferred to her current team, playing in all 19 games.

She scored one goal, made four assists, and helped keep 11 clean sheets.

Her achievements earned her a second straight appearance on the All-Pac-12 second team.

Internationally, Ayo has been part of the US youth teams since the U-15 level.

She played two games and started one during the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

She also helped the US win the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Ayo was named to the Best XI team at the 2022 Sud Ladies Cup.

She also featured for the U-23 team at the 2023 Portland Thorns Preseason Tournament.

Having played for the United States youth teams, she would need to switch nationality to play for Nigeria in future tournaments.

Away from football, Ayo is studying sociology. She hopes to become a lawyer or a professional footballer soon.
