CHAN 2024: Nigeria fall to slim defeat against Senegal in opener

Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles kicked off their campaign at the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal on Tuesday in Zanzibar.

The only goal of the match came in the 75th minute at the Amaan Stadium, following a defensive lapse that left goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha exposed. Drawn off his line during a moment of confusion at the back, Mustapha couldn’t recover as the Lions of Teranga capitalized with their only shot on target.

It was a tightly contested game, marked by high intensity and physicality from both sides. Nigeria enjoyed more possession throughout the match but struggled to penetrate a well-organized Senegalese backline.

Mustapha was called into action early, parrying a dangerous cross in the 21st minute. Senegal again threatened in the 33rd minute, narrowly missing from a set piece.

Despite mounting pressure, the Super Eagles failed to convert dominance into chances. Defenders Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka stood firm, while Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo worked tirelessly in midfield to push the team forward. But Senegal’s compact setup left Nigeria with few openings.

The Senegalese nearly extended their lead late on, but Ngenge and Nduka combined to clear the danger.

The loss leaves Nigeria at the bottom of Group D with no points, after Congo and Sudan played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day.

Nigeria will look to bounce back when they face Sudan in their second group match next Tuesday, again at the Amaan Stadium.
