FG Cancels Independence Day Parade, Affirms Other Activities Will Hold

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional parade to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary scheduled for tomorrow, October 1, in Abuja.

The announcement was made on Sunday via a statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Senator George Akume.

Director of Information and Public Relations in the OSGF, Mr. Segun Imohiosen, said the decision does not diminish the significance of the occasion. He emphasized that all other programmes lined up for the anniversary will proceed as planned.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary. The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm,” the statement read.

Imohiosen added that the Federal Government regrets any inconvenience the cancellation may cause and reaffirmed its commitment to marking the anniversary in a manner that reflects national pride.

He also expressed appreciation for the understanding and support of Nigerians, members of the diplomatic corps, and other invited guests.

The statement concluded with a call for continued support of the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as essential to the country’s progress.
