FG unveils cash rewards for Team Nigeria medalists ahead of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

The Federal Government has announced a performance-based cash reward package for Team Nigeria athletes who secure medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of efforts to strengthen the country's preparations and improve its performance at the global sporting event.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja during the unveiling of the Games Hosting Rights by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade. He revealed that athletes who win gold medals will receive $3,000, silver medalists will earn $2,000, while bronze medalists will be rewarded with $1,500.

Olopade also disclosed that the Federal Government has begun paying camp allowances to athletes currently training for the Games in various camps across the world. According to him, the initiative is aimed at boosting the morale of the athletes and ensuring they are fully prepared for the competition.

"We have taken a decision on the reward package for our athletes. Gold medalists will receive $3,000, silver medalists $2,000, while bronze medalists will earn $1,500," Olopade said.

He added that coaches of medal-winning athletes will also benefit from the incentive scheme, with a performance bonus of $5,000 approved to recognize their contributions to the athletes' success.

In another major development, the NSC announced a partnership with The What Network to provide free-to-air broadcast coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The collaboration is expected to give Nigerians across the country unrestricted access to Team Nigeria's performances throughout the competition.

"Recognising the importance of bringing the Games into every Nigerian home, the NSC has partnered with The What Network to deliver free-to-air coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games," Olopade said.

"Through this collaboration, every Nigerian will be able to follow Team Nigeria's journey live and free, celebrating the dedication of our athletes and inspiring the next generation of sporting champions."

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, assured Nigerians that funding would not be a challenge to the country's participation at the Games. He reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to providing the financial resources needed to support Team Nigeria's campaign.

The latest initiatives underscore the Commission's determination to enhance the country's preparations while ensuring fans across Nigeria can follow one of the world's biggest multi-sport events without barriers.

Nigeria is expected to parade a formidable squad at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, led by world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint star Kayinsola Ajayi, shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, para-powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and several other elite competitors across athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, and para sports.
