FIBA clears Sam Ahmedu to serve on NBBF board, confirms no regulatory impediment
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed that there are no regulatory impediments to retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu serving on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board, bringing renewed attention to his decades of service in international basketball administration.
In a letter dated October 19, 2026, and addressed to NBBF President, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed that Ahmedu has been a member of FIBA bodies since 1997, making him the longest-serving Nigerian within the international basketball governing structure, according to the letter.
The clarification provides an important reference point in discussions about Ahmedu’s role in Nigerian basketball administration as the newly elected NBBF Board begins its 2026–2030 tenure.
FIBA expressly stated that its regulatory framework presents no impediment to Ahmedu serving on the NBBF Board.
Ahmedu, who is President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, has remained a prominent figure in basketball administration, drawing on decades of experience and involvement in the international game.
His extensive institutional knowledge and international connections are considered valuable assets that could support the development of Nigerian basketball, strengthen its administration and enhance the country's representation within the global basketball community.
The development follows the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, 2026, which produced a new board for the 2026–2030 term under Mustapha’s leadership.
In the same correspondence, FIBA congratulated Mustapha and the newly elected board members, welcoming the federation’s stated commitment to good governance and elections conducted in accordance with its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.
The international governing body also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing NBBF Board under the leadership of Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida.
With Ahmedu’s eligibility clarified, attention now turns to how his experience and standing within international basketball can contribute to the administration and growth of the sport in Nigeria.
His potential inclusion on the NBBF Board would offer an opportunity to draw on his institutional experience and maintain a strong connection between Nigerian basketball and the wider international game.
The issue extends beyond an individual board position, highlighting the importance of utilising the experience, relationships and knowledge accumulated by veteran administrators to strengthen basketball development at all levels.
FIBA has now made its position clear: there is no regulatory impediment to Ahmedu serving on the NBBF Board. The focus therefore shifts to how his decades of service can continue to benefit Nigerian basketball.
