Favour Ofili leaves Nigeria for Turkey after years of heartbreak
At just 22, one of Nigeria’s brightest sprint stars has officially switched nationality to represent Turkey, not for money, not for fame, but out of sheer frustration. According to reports, Ofili made the move after enduring years of what she calls “Frustration” from Nigerian Athletics Federation.
Despite clocking a qualifying time for the 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Ofili’s name was never entered. she qualified fair and square, but the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) failed to register her. It’s the same gut-wrenching error that robbed her and 13 others of a chance to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, due to anti-doping paperwork failures. Twice in four years. Two Olympic dreams, gone.
Tired of the cycle, Ofili began the process of switching allegiance on May 31, 2025, and notified the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). She made it clear that this wasn’t about money. It was about dignity and being seen.
And just when it seemed like things couldn’t get worse. In June 2025, the same AFN executives who oversaw these repeated blunders were re-elected. That, she said, sealed it.
With personal bests of 10.93 seconds in the 100m and 21.96 seconds in the 200m, Ofili is not just another athlete. She’s a global contender, one who recently made the 200m final at the Paris Games, finishing sixth.
