NWFL Premiership MD8: Mary Mamudu's strike seals dramatic away win for Edo Queens in Uyo

Edo Queens continued their impressive run in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Ibom Angels in a tense Matchday 8 encounter played behind closed doors at the Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State.

The Benin-based side wasted no time in stamping their authority on the game as winger Chioma Moses struck inside the opening two minutes. Showing pace, composure and skill, Moses glided past the Ibom Angels backline before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Aret Godstime with no chance. The early goal stunned the Edwin Okon-led hosts and set the tone for an intense contest.

Despite the absence of fans, the encounter was charged with tension, with anxiety clearly visible on the touchlines. Edo Queens dominated possession and dictated the tempo for long spells, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to extend their lead. Ibom Angels, however, were not without threat, making a few dangerous forays forward, only to be repeatedly denied by a disciplined Edo Queens defence.

The second half brought renewed intensity and drama. A lapse in concentration at the back from Edo Queens allowed Juliet John to punish them in the 56th minute, restoring parity for Ibom Angels and igniting hopes of a comeback.

Stung by the equaliser, Edo Queens responded with renewed hunger, piling pressure on the hosts in search of a winner. Their persistence paid off four minutes from time when Mary Mamudu struck decisively in the 86th minute to reclaim the lead and silence any remaining resistance from the home side.

The victory sees Edo Queens climb further up the league table as they turn their attention to a crucial away fixture against Rivers Angels in Port Harcourt to conclude the first stanza of the season.

Speaking after the match, Edo Queens head coach Moses Aduku expressed gratitude and satisfaction with the result.

“Well, I have to thank God for this victory. I am happy my girls are back from the national camp. Ibom Angels are a good side. We could have wrapped up the game in the first half, but all the same, we got the three points, which is the most important thing.”

He added:

“We still have some work to do. We must continue to correct ourselves in areas we haven’t gotten right. We have a game next week against Rivers Angels and we are going with the same winning mentality. Every team wants to win, especially those contesting the Super Six ticket with us, so we thank God for the three points.”

Ibom Angels coach Edwin Okon admitted disappointment but remained optimistic.

“This is not what we wanted. We planned for three points but lost it. That is football for you. We thank God there were no injuries. We have to go back and fortify the team for the second round.”

He concluded:

“Yes, you will say Edo Queens were better because they won, but I want to assure our fans that we will bounce back.”

Edo Queens now head into their next fixture full of confidence, knowing another positive result could firmly position them for a strong push toward the Super Six.
