Okon-George and Nathaniel excel in 400m events, Ashe and Bada secure 100m championships at MTN CHAMPS in Lagos
The second day of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Lagos continued the vibrant and thrilling performances witnessed on the first day, with numerous medals awarded across different categories at the Yabatech and Unilag Sports Complexes.
Patience Okon-George, a six-time national champion in the women's 400m, showcased her prowess by winning the event with a remarkable Season’s Best (SB) time of 52.67 seconds. She outpaced Team MTN’s Miracle Donald-Uwem, who finished in 55.10 seconds, and Pemisire Adepoju Adedoyin, who clocked 56.29 seconds.
In the men's 400m, former national champion Samson Nathaniel emerged victorious, completing the race in 46.71 seconds. Team MTN’s Benjamin Magaji equaled his Personal Best (PB) of 48.04 seconds to secure second place, while Deji Sholotan took third with a time of 48.31 seconds.
As expected, Favour Ashe dominated the men’s 100m, finishing in 10.28 seconds, ahead of Chidera Ezeakor (10.38 seconds) and Thankgod Igube (10.49 seconds).
Iyanoluwa Bada clinched the women’s title with a slightly wind-aided time of 11.30 seconds (+2.6m/s), while Flore-Julie Krakre and Janet Adesiyan followed in second and third with times of 11.86 seconds and 11.90 seconds, respectively.
In the junior category, John Caleb continued his winning streak by taking the men’s 100m title with a time of 10.45 seconds. Qudus Akintoye finished in 10.65 seconds, while Abdulrahman Jimoh secured third place with a time of 10.75 seconds.
Team MTN’s Lucy Nwankwo achieved a personal milestone by breaking the 12-second barrier for the first time, leading a Team MTN sweep in the junior women’s 100m final with a new lifetime best of 11.99 seconds. She finished ahead of Mercy Ogbonna (12.16 seconds) and Azeezat Muhammed Raji (12.18 seconds), all of whom improved their personal bests from the semifinals.
